The retyping problem
Someone sends you a photo of a form, a page of a book, a screenshot of a price list โ and you need the text, not the picture. Retyping a full page by hand is exactly as fun as it sounds.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) solves this: it looks at the image and converts the letters back into real, selectable, copy-paste text.
How to do it in your browser
KiaKia Tools has two OCR routes:
- Image to Text โ for photos, screenshots and scanned pictures. Upload, wait a moment, and the recognised text appears in an editable box with a confidence indicator. Copy it or download it as a .txt file.
- PDF to Text โ for scanned PDF documents. Every page is read out into text you can edit.
The OCR engine is downloaded to your browser once and then runs on your device โ your documents are never sent to a server for "processing", which matters when the pages contain someone's personal information.
Five tips for accurate results
- Light it well โ shadows across a page confuse any OCR
- Hold straight โ skewed text is read as skewed words
- Get close โ small, blurry text produces wrong characters
- Prefer black text on light backgrounds โ white-on-dark works, but slower and less accurately
- Proofread names and numbers โ OCR is excellent, but a "1" can still become an "l", so give the result a quick skim before you rely on it
