Why iPhone Photos Arrive as .HEIC (And How to Open Them Anywhere)

Someone sent us a photo for a passport-style crop last month and swore their "phone was spoilt" because the office computer called the file unreadable. It was a perfectly normal HEIC. Here is the whole story.

The mystery file from an iPhone

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) instead of the older JPG. The format is genuinely better: roughly half the file size for the same visual quality, plus support for things like depth information and richer colour. Apple has good reasons for using it.

The problem is everywhere else. Older Windows versions, many website upload forms, some printers, office photocopiers and plenty of Android phones still refuse to open it. So the photo works beautifully on the iPhone that took it and fails the moment it leaves the Apple world.

Your options

  • On the iPhone itself: Settings - Camera - Formats - "Most Compatible" makes future photos JPG. Simple, but you lose the storage savings, and it does nothing for photos you already have.
  • Change the filename to .jpg: does nothing. The data inside is genuinely different; renaming is not converting.
  • Convert it properly: a real conversion decodes the HEIC image and re-encodes it as a universally accepted JPG. This is what the HEIC to JPG tool does, entirely inside your browser.

Converting with the tool

  1. Open HEIC to JPG, tap the upload area, and pick the file (or several โ€” batches are supported within the free tier's batch limit).
  2. The conversion runs on your device in seconds. There is no upload step at all โ€” personal photos are exactly the kind of files you do not want sitting on a stranger's server.
  3. Download the JPG. It will open literally anywhere โ€” every phone, computer, printer, portal and upload form.

Things worth knowing

  • Quality: a standard JPG conversion is visually indistinguishable from the HEIC original for normal use โ€” sharing, home printing, attaching to forms.
  • Live Photos: converting gives you the still photo, which is what forms and prints actually need.
  • File size: expect the JPG to be larger than the HEIC original. That is normal โ€” HEIC is the more efficient format, JPG is the more compatible one. You are trading size for universality, on purpose.

When you do not need to convert

If both sides are in the Apple ecosystem (AirDrop, iMessage, iCloud links), send the HEIC as-is โ€” it works and stays smaller. Convert when the file must survive contact with the wider world: web forms, Windows machines, print shops, WhatsApp groups with Android users, or anything government-related.

One conversion, thirty seconds, and the file stops being a problem.
